Out-going McGirr Proposes Longer Terms For Mayor, Commissioners

The amount of time elected municipal officials stay on the job in Huron could be changing. Mayor Dave McGirr brought the first reading of an ordinance increasing the terms of office for the Mayor and City Commissioners to four years at  Monday night’s City Commission meeting…

McGirr says right now the City of Huron risks losing half of the City Commission if both current Commissioners were to lose re-election bids once every three years. Mc Girr brought the ordinance to the Commission now because he will not be seeking re-election this year after 15 years as a Commissioner and Mayor in Huron. The ordinance, if approved would be effective January 1st of 2014. The municipal election to decide a new mayor and open City Commission spot is April 9th
